Last week Shaundra invited me to see an advance screening of Invincible tonight. I'm always up for a free movie, and I thought it would be fun, so I said yes. Little did I know how much I would have to pay to see my free movie...
When sorting out the details, we decided to meet at the theatre - the paramount downtown. I figure it will be easiest for me to drive to the subway and take it downtown - avoiding traffic and finding a place to park. I left work just before 5 as I figured that I would have to be on the train before 5:30 to make it to the theatre for 6. I hop on at Warden and begin my journey.
At each stop, I look at the trains going in the other direction and think to myself how lucky I am going against the crowds heading out of the city after work. I keep checking my watch to see if I'll be able to make it on time...the train finally pulls into St. Andrew (one stop past where I wanted to get off - last time I ask for subway directions from co-workers, but that's another story). I run up the steps onto the street and circle around trying to figure out where the hell I am. I see a familiar landmark and head in the right direction...or so I thought!
Just then I notice a text message on my cell..."Wrong theatre - i am so sorry! Yonge and eglinton" I reply back "Are you kidding of?" (I hate my T9 sometimes!) Then I try to call Shaundra who seems to be dialing each time she picks up the phone (turns out she was trying to text me back). At this point I must look like one of those annoying city people walking up the street yelling into my cell phone, but strangely enough, I don't think one person was looking at me...oh well - must try harder next time! Once I finally reached Shaundra, I sighed, mumbled under my breath and hopped back on the subway at Osgoode - where I should have got off the first time - to join the masses that I was watching from my seat on the way there.
An hour after first getting on the subway, I finally reach Yonge and Eglinton (which I could have easily driven to and parked nearby for free...) I managed to exit the station at the wrong place, end up on the street in the rain, then when I got to the theatre I had to wait 10 minutes for my veggie burger at BK...and because it was an advance screening, I had my bag searched and had the metal detector wand thingy swiped over me.
Thank god the movie was good! The best line though was at the end of the movie and wasn't scripted. As they are showing the real Vince Papale I hear Shaundra exclaim, "Whoa...He's no Mark Wahlberg!"
I won't even get into the search for the bathroom story...I'm too tired from the long subway ride - at least I got to experience the sights (and smells) of the city!
Good Night,
C.R.
